Material judgment begins close to the surface

About Carnegie Fabrics: context before claims

This site presents Carnegie Fabrics through contract upholstery, textile wallcoverings, and Xorel. It deliberately keeps performance and environmental language attached to the applicable product evidence.

Material lens

Read the textile as part of an interior assembly

Color, hand, scale, and weave construction matter, but the surface also meets a substrate, edge condition, cleaning routine, traffic pattern, and installation method. A product conversation is stronger when those conditions are visible before a specification is accepted.

For upholstery, that may mean usable width, repeat, backing, abrasion method, cleaning code, seam planning, and the geometry of the intended seat. For wallcovering, it may mean substrate preparation, backing, pattern match, adhesive, flame-test scope, and ongoing maintenance.

Evidence lens

Keep every statement with the record that supports it

A product sheet describes a product. A test report describes a specimen under a method. A material disclosure records a defined scope. A certification has an issuer, applicability, and validity period. These records should not be collapsed into a single generic badge.

Xorel is treated as a named material platform, not shorthand for one universal construction. Content, finish, backing, performance, environmental attributes, warranty, and application suitability must be checked for the exact current product.

Working principles for a material review

Four habits that protect design intent

01

Name the surface

Upholstery, wallcovering, wrapped panel, and window treatment create different mechanical, installation, and maintenance conditions.

02

Name the construction

Pattern, colorway, backing, finish, usable width, repeat, and content belong to the exact product under review.

03

Name the method

Wyzenbeek, Martindale, flame spread, lightfastness, and cleaning protocols cannot be translated into one generic performance score.

04

Name the boundary

Textile evidence does not automatically establish the behavior of an adhesive, substrate, cushion, panel, wall, or complete acoustic assembly.

Connect design intent to the current product record

Send the application, product reference, substrate, maintenance exposure, and governing test requirement. The inquiry will be clearer without invented company metrics, production claims, or blanket certificates.
